Why I built BylineCV

I know that looking for a job already asks a lot of you. In this AI era, job titles and descriptions can feel very different from what they were five years ago. Sometimes I come across a position I have never heard of, only to find that the responsibilities are familiar. It takes a more careful look to understand the role and tailor my CV so an employer can see how my experience fits.

As I applied to different companies, I kept creating different versions of my CV. Each one was tailored to a particular role or employer. Before long, the files became difficult to manage, and I was no longer sure which version was the latest or which one I had sent.

And that was only the versioning problem. There was still the content to manage and the design to think about. I kept duplicating documents, copying information from one CV to another, and making the same edits in several places. I was spending too much time managing the files themselves.

Tools like ChatGPT and Claude could help with the writing. Microsoft Word and Canva could help put it on a page. But I still needed a better way to keep everything together. I was tired of repeating the same work. That was the point when I started BylineCV.

One place to keep it all together

BylineCV began as a solution to a problem I was facing myself. I wanted to keep different versions of my CV in one place, reuse information between them, and make changes without losing track of my work. I wanted each application to have its own version, while keeping everything organised and easy to find.

That idea is what guides BylineCV today. You can create and manage multiple CVs, duplicate a document for another role, reuse your information, and edit each version to suit the application. You can also manage your cover letters, check your CV for compatibility with Applicant Tracking Systems, and download your documents in Word or PDF whenever you need them. What started with my own frustration is now something I hope can make this part of the job search easier for you, too.

Free. Because it matters.

I believe being able to manage your career documents should be something you can access without worrying about another subscription.

That is why the core features of BylineCV are free. My hope is that spending less time organising files gives you more time to think about your next step and prepare for the opportunities that matter to you.

Growing with you

BylineCV is still in its pilot phase, and I am continuing to learn and improve it. During this time, all available features, including AI assistance, are free to use. I hope you will try them, see what helps, and share your experience with me.

As BylineCV grows, I may introduce premium plans for certain AI features. This may mean limits on AI usage for free accounts, but creating, storing, managing, and downloading your CVs, resumes, and cover letters will remain free.

I cannot take away all the uncertainty of finding a job. What I hope to offer is a little more order, a little less repeated work, and a place where you can feel ready for your next application.
